About Jazz
I played jazz in the army as a trumpet and sax player, but I never seriously studied jazz and improv until I attended a summer session of Jazz in July with Dr. Billy Taylor at UMass. I spent my mornings for a week locked in an ensemble room with him at the piano and learned several things; I will never be a jazz great. I have a lot to learn and I'd better get to it.
I also studied with people like Terrill Stafford at Aspen, CO and other sessions. I was lucky to have Dr. Max Vanderbeek allow me to sit in with his combo several times and allow me to learn how to play at gigs. About the time I really began to understand jazz, I moved to elementary school. I now write bebop heads and teach 10 year olds the blues scale and how to improv. So I have the people who humbled me along the way and helped me learn the little I know about jazz to thank.
At River Hill HS, I had up to three jazz bands and several combos which played at Festivals and won many awards. I had three concert bands, Percussion Ensemble, Indoor Guard and Marching Band to keep me busy. I was teaching guitar and over 220 kids, but they didn't see fit to give me an assistant director, so now I teach at an elementary school.
The River Hill Jazz Band and Combo played the 2000 Montreaux Jazz Festival, the Vienne Jazz Festival and the Villaneuve Jazz Festival.
